Wake Awards 2014 basketball camp scholarships
Jayde Gamble of Creech Road Elementary in Garner, NC attended the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp at N.C. State University, and Matthew McIntyre of Wendell Middle School in Wendell, NC attended the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, both on full scholarships from Wake Electric. Jayde is the daughter of Kelly Morrell. Matthew is the son of Derrick and Nikki McIntyre.
“Wake Electric is pleased to give these outstanding students the opportunity to experience life on a college campus and learn from NCAA coaches and student-athletes,” said Jim Mangum, general manager and CEO at Wake Electric. “These camps teach valuable lessons that students can apply in their lives both on and off the court.”
Gamble and McIntyre were selected by a panel of judges based on an application that included academic achievements, extracurricular activities, an essay and a short-answer question.
At the overnight camps, students will stay in dorms and soak up lessons on the hardwoods from the collegiate coaching staffs and student-athletes. Leading the N.C. State women’s camp is head coach Wes Moore, who joined the Wolfpack women last year after 15 seasons at Chattanooga, his coaching staff, and current and former N.C. State women’s basketball players. The Roy Williams camp is led by two-time NCAA national championship coach Roy Williams, his staff, and current and past Tar Heel basketball players. Coaches at both camps will work closely with each camper to develop fundamental basketball skills and practice playing hard while working cooperatively.
The Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp was held June 23-26 in Raleigh, and the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp was held June 21-25 in Chapel Hill.
The all-expense paid scholarships, sponsored by North Carolina’s 26 Touchstone Energy cooperatives, provide funding for more than 50 middle-school students from across North Carolina to attend basketball camp. This is the 11th year that Touchstone Energy has awarded young women scholarships to attend an N.C.
